Oils 10W-40
Engine oils with the designation 10W-40 are suitable for a wide range of operating conditions and temperature ranges. This viscosity grade combines the benefits of cold-start performance (the 10W designation) with sufficient protection at higher temperatures (the 40 designation). They are ideal for high-performance engines and older vehicle models. Using 10W-40 motor oils can help extend engine life and reduce wear. When selecting an oil, it is important to follow the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations for optimal performance and maintenance.
What 10W-40 engine oils do we offer?
We carry 10W-40 motor oil from FUCHS in variants for passenger cars, commercial vehicles, construction equipment, and tractors, in sizes ranging from 1 L to a 205 L drum. Choose based on your vehicle type and the standards or approvals listed in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.
What does the 10W-40 designation mean?
10W-40 is a viscosity grade according to the SAE J300 standard. The 10W grade means that the oil passes a cold start test at −25 °C. The number 40 indicates a viscosity at 100 °C in the range of 12.5–16.3 mm²/s, just like 5W-40 oil.

Frequently Asked Questions
5W-40 or 10W-40 oil?
At operating temperature, both fall into the same 40 class (12.5–16.3 mm²/s at 100 °C). The difference lies in cold-weather performance: 5W passes the cold-start test at −30 °C, while 10W passes at −25 °C. The vehicle manufacturer’s specifications determine the choice.
10W-40 or 15W-40 oil?
At high temperatures, they are both in the same Class 40, but 15W oil only passes the cold start test down to −20 °C. Use the viscosity specified by the engine manufacturer.
Is 10W-40 oil suitable for a passenger car?
Yes, if it is specified in the manufacturer’s manual.
What sizes of 10W-40 oil are available?
From 1 L through 4 L and 5 L up to 20 L and a 205 L drum, depending on the specific oil.
